The Barrier Dam

In 1932, the Zuyder Zee was closed off when work on the 30-kilometre-long Barrier Dam was completed. The Dam led to the formation of the IJsselmeer, a huge inland sea. Civil engineer Cornelis Lely drafted plans to build the Barrier Dam and reclaim parts of the IJsselmeer as early as 1891.
